Even as six teachers of the Primary Teachers’ Training College (PTC) were arrested on Tuesday for allegedly gangraping an 18-year-old student, Chief Minister Narendra Modi rushed two of his Dalit ministers to Patan this afternoon for an on-the-spot assessment of the situation.
Education Minister Ramanlal Vora and Social Justice and Empowerment Minister Fakirbhai Vaghela have now met relatives of the victim, including her mother, at Patan and inquired about the incident from them.
“We both tried to meet the victim at the local hospital where she is being treated. But, the girl is yet to come out of the trauma,” Vaghela told The Indian Express over phone from Patan.
Vaghela said the local residents were still enraged over the incident and Patan also observed a daylong bandh today as a mark of protest.
He, however, claimed that the people, particularly the relatives of the rape victim, were satisfied with the swift action taken by the government — suspension and arrest of all the six college teachers allegedly involved in the gangrape.
Condemning the incident, Modi today said in a statement that the government would not only provide socio-economic security to the victim, but also take care of her education, and help her to rehabilitate .
The government today also suspended the six PTC Patan teachers and replaced them with as many female teachers.
