Mohali As dust settles on the trauma that struck Mumbai in the face of the 26/11 attack, the family of Hotel Taj Mahal’s general manager, Karambir Singh Kang has, in a novel way, launched a crusade against terrorism.

In loving memory of Karambir’s wife Niti (40) and sons, Uday (14) and Samar (5), who were killed in the attack, the family installed a board outside the main gate of a Gurdwara in Phase XI on Monday afternoon where hundreds of people gathered to pay tributes to the Mumbai terror victims.

All those, who came to attend the antim ardas (last prayers) were seen queued up before the board to express their sentiments against terrorism.

With the picture of Hotel Taj Mahal in flames on its masthead, the board read, “Now time has come to stand united and forget all differences, may it be political, ideological or religious to give a befitting reply to terrorism and those who perpetrate it.”

One of the visitors wrote, “We pray to the Almighty that the immortal souls of beloved Niti, Uday and Samar rest in peace.”

Another message read: “We pray to the Almighty to give strength and courage to Karambir, his mom and dad, to face the unbearable loss.”

The visibly-shaken Karambir stood with folded hands inside the gurudwara. He was tightlipped even as people poured in to offer their condolences. When Deep Kaur, who had also lost her only daughter, Jasmine, at Hotel Oberoi-Trident, met Karambir’s mother, Kamaljit Kaur, both the women turned inconsolable.

A pall of gloom descended on the Gurdwara and amid an eerie silence, everyone stood with folded hands and moist eyes before the portraits of the three departed.

Visitors offered flowers and prostrated before the portraits as a mark of respect.

While Karambir was still too numb to speak, his aged father Major General (retd) Jagtar Singh Kang and mother Kamaljit Kaur could be seen in deep sadness.

Those who spoke, including several politicians and bereaved family members, had one common demand — clear and direct approach to tackle terrorism and wipe it out, once and for all.

While Mohali Deputy Commissioner Rahul Bhandari and Senior Superintendent of Police Jatinder Singh Aulakh represented the District Administration, nobody from the state government appears to have attended the last prayers.
