Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Jatinder Singh Aulakh said Gurjeet, in his mid-40s, was smuggling the contraband in his scooter, when a team of Crime Investigation Agency (CIA) under the supervision of Superintendent of Police (Detective) R K Bakshi nabbed him around 11.30 am.
Bakshi told Newsline that on the basis of suspicion, Gurjeet was signaled to stop at a checkpost on the bridge over a seasonal rivulet in Nada village on the outskirts of Chandigarh, but sped away. The CIA team, however, managed to catch him after a short chase and during the search, a plastic packet containing opium was recovered from his scooter.
Elsewhere in the district, 43 boxes of Indian Made Foreign Liquor, meant for sale only in Chandigarh, were seized from three persons, identified as Ram Nath and Ashok Chander of Delhi and Shafiq Ahmed and Billa of Janata Colony in Nayagaon.
