Mohali resident dies, student hurt in separate accidents

Mohali A man, in his early thirties, died while a teenager sustained serious injuries in separate road mishaps in Mohali during the past 24 hours, said the police on Tuesday.

Shivdeep Singh, a resident of Sector 71, was returning home on his motorcycle when he was hit by a speeding Maruti Zen car near Phase 3B1-Sector 71 Chowk around 10.15 pm, investigation officer Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Manjeet Singh told Newsline while adding the victim died on the spot.

In another accident, a 13-year-old girl was seriously injured when a speeding scooter hit her while she was riding her way home on a bicycle. The injured, identified as Deepa Sikka, is a student of Class IX at Sant Isher Singh Public School in Sector 70, said the ASI while adding that she was rushed to the GMSM-16 where she was admitted for treatment. While separate cases of causing death and injuries by negligent and rash driving have been lodged, the accused drivers managed to flee the spot, added the ASI.

Speeding truck hits bicycle, 1 dead
One person died after a speeding truck hit his bicycle near Colony Number 5 on Tuesday. Gurdial Singh was a mason by profession and a resident of the same colony. “The truck was speeding and hit the victim’s bicycle while trying to overtake another vehicle,” an eyewitness told the police.

The victim sustained serious injuries. Eyewitnesses informed the police, who rushed him to the hospital where he was declared dead on arrival. The truck driver fled the spot after the accident. Eyewitnesses, however, noted down the registration number of the vehicle and handed it over to the police. The body has been kept at Government Multi-Specialty Hospital in Sector 16 for postmortem. “We have identified the truck and are looking for the driver,” said Inspector Sudershan Thakur, Station House Officer, Sector 36 police station.
