The Punjab and Haryana High Court has given a green signal to the move, which is expected to spell relief for all those who had to go to Ropar to attend trials.
With an Additional District and Sessions Judge in Mohali, all cases pertaining to rent, civil or other appeals, along with sessions trials, will be heard in Mohali. The decision was taken by the Chief Justice of Punjab and Haryana High Court, Justice Vijender Kumar Jain, along with other judges of the High Court in a recent meeting.
In yet another significant decision, Dera Bassi is to get a Judicial Magistrate (First Class) and consequently a court.
At present, the residents of Dera Bassi and its surrounding areas have to go to Mohali to contest their rent and civil cases. With the inception of a court, all cases pertaining to civil disputes will be transferred to Dera Bassi.
Also, residents of Dera Bassi will be able to file their appeals and attend sessions trials in Mohali.
At present, Mohali Court has only two magistrates and no sessions judge to decide appeals.
Before Mohali became a district, residents of Dera Bassi used to go to Rajpura to attend hearings.
Justice M M Kumar of the High Court is slated to visit the site in Dera Bassi which has identified for the court. The name of the first sessions judge for Mohali will also be decided within this month.
“Both, the ADJ in Mohali and the first court in Dera Bassi, will start functioning most likely by the end of this month. The issue had been pending with the government for long,” said a court official.
