New Delhi JitendEr Kumar Mohalla, one of the three detained after the hijack drama at the Indira Gandhi International Airport on Sunday evening, was arrested by the Delhi Police and sent to 14-day judicial custody by a local court on Monday.

Sources said security agencies had detained at least 13 people of which 10 were let off. Apart from Mohalla, two other passengers — Samir Uppal and Harpreet Anand — were detained for further questioning.

While Uppal and Anand were released, Mohalla was arrested by the Delhi Police’s Special Cell and booked under Suppression of Unlawful Acts in the Safety of Civil Aviation Act 1982, a non-bailable offence.

He has also been booked under Section 336 Act endangering life and personal safety of others) and section 506 (punishment for criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code.

Police also said that no trace of alcohol has been found in his blood.

The pilot, Captain Amit Singh, told Newsline over the phone: “The enquiry report is expected on Wednesday. We felt a passenger was a threat to the aircraft and passengers; we just took the best safety measures possible. everything will be clear once the enquiry report is out.”

The enquiry committee of the Directorate General of Civil Aviation will give its report on Wednesday.

Mohalla, 41, a chartered accountant, has high blood sugar and is on medication. He has a weak bladder and needs to visit the restroom frequently.

“During investigation, we found the accused wanted a seat near the restroom. The air hostess has also confirmed that Mohalla was desperate to get his seat changed and had a minor argument with Samir Uppal and Harpreet Anand,” an investigating officer said.

Other passengers have told Newsline that even though Mohalla’s behaviour was not alarming, he did seem a little out of his senses.

“He was fidgety and was pacing up and down very aggressively,” Surinder Kapur, a passenger said.
