Rejoicing after the news came that his son will be home after six days in Arthur Road jail, Mohan Jadhav, the father of Derek, one of the accused, said: “I’m delighted that my son is coming back. We are all eagerly waiting to take him home.” Fourteen youths were arrested on Thursday night— two days after the women were molested by a mob of about 50 persons near Juhu beach in the wee hours of January 1.
According to Jadhav, Derek’s 64-year old mother is the happiest to that he is returning home. “Derek’s mother is very delighted. Unka to pair zameen par nahi hai…” he added. Jadhav says the families of the accused will struggle to clear their sons’ names. “We know they are clean,” he stated.
Advocate Nagesh Joshi, who represented the 14 accused, said his clients would have to visit the police station whenever called. Of the 14, 12 are residents of a single building in Vile Parle (East), the Siddhivinayak Society along Shraddhanand Road. Their families had maintained that the boys had been wrongly accused — two of them had appeared in photographs shot by photo-journalists present at the time of the incident only because they had stepped in to see what the commotion was about, the families had alleged.
