Kolkata, January 2 Fire in the abandoned coal mines of Eastern Coalfields Limited (ECL) in Asansol in Burdwan district spread further on Wednesday engulfing more than 60 pits as smoke was seen billowing out of them.

Police said this has led to panic among more than 50,000 people living in the nearby villages of Jamuria, Benali, Satgram, Bijpur and Lebardhaora.

An oil pipeline of Indian Oil Corporation passing nearby and National Highway-2 are likely to get affected by the raging fire.

“If the fire is not contained in time, there is a possibility of blast taking place in the mines abandoned for the past 15 years,” said Satish Puri, mine safety manager of ECL. Fire has been raging in the abandoned mines spread over 1000 acres since Monday. Fire safety officials are trying to plug the pits with sand to put out the fire.
