Mumbai After re-opening the Kandivli railway over bridge, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation will construct two similar bridges on the north and south Jogeshwari to decongest traffic. At present, there are four working railway crossing gates which reduce the speed of local trains enabling pedestrians to cross the tracks. But crossing tracks at times leads to accidents. The ROBs are expected to decongest the road traffic, improve local railway speed and ease the pedestrian movement. The railway crossing gates will be closed down following the construction of the bridges.

With the funding of World Bank under the MUTP, the civic administration has proposed two ROBs: the one on the southern side will connect traffic between SV Road and Western Express Highway and on the northern side it will connect SV Road (Ram Mandir Road) to Nirlon on east side adjoining WE Highway. The estimated cost of the ROBs will be Rs 38 crore and Rs 24 crore respectively.

Standing committee chairman Ravindra Waikar said both the projects will begin soon. “The construction will start in at few months. Both the ROBs are necessary to ease the traffic as well as improve pedestrian movement,” he said.

On the WR line till Borivali, there are four manned level crossings at Andheri, Jogeshwari, Oshiwara and Kandivli. Although after 14 long years, the ROB at Kandivli was reopened in November, the railway crossing gates have not been fully shut down. The construction of ROBs at Jogeshwari will help in closure of crossing gates at Oshiwara and Jogeshwari, leaving only the one at Andheri crossing operational.
