New Delhi, February 13 Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Wednesday said police should recruit more women personnel so that women-related issues could be tackled by female instead of male cops.

"Women police personnel should also be deployed in PCR vans to ensure handling women-related cases effectively," Dikshit said at a function to release booklet and CD on Meera Didi Se Poocho, an initiave of National Commission for Women.

Dikshit added that while the contribution of women in public life had a long history, it was unfortunate that they had to fight for equal status even today. "This is the situation in urban areas and the scene in rural areas is no better as women still do not have the independence to take decisions," she said. Dikshit called upon women to get educated so that they could claim their rights.

Meera Didi Se Poocho has been launched to create awareness among women about the basic legal rights concerning offences like rape, dowry death, domestic violence, sexual harassment at workplace, child marriages, NRI marriages, foeticide, trafficking etc. in simple language. It also describes the Right to Information Act.
