Ila Arun has never had a penchant for history, and had never heard of Jiji Anaga, emperor Akbar’s principal foster mother, before meeting filmmaker Ashutosh Gowariker. “All I knew was that he was making a movie on Jodhaa and Akbar and parts of it would revolve around Rajasthan, my native state,” she recalls. Arun met up with Gowariker, hoping for a role based on her Rajput background, but was offered a completely different character, that of Maha Manga, an Anagha prototype, who plays a pivotal role in the movie. “Maha Manga was both a matriarch and a clever politician. There are several shades to her character as an individual. It was much more than what I had hoped for,” she says.

Maha Manga’s brooding presence in the movie has garnered Arun a lot of praise, but she passes the kudos on to the director. “Ashutosh is a visionary. To create a fiction out of facts takes a lot of courage. As artists, we hardly did any homework. We were guided by Ashu’s vision and his intensive research,” she says. The director apparently had made detailed character sketches with ample historical references for the cast.”When I asked Ashu about Maha Manga, he gave me a ready reckoner on her personality with even copies of miniature paintings showing her as the lone female courtier in Akbar’s durbar,” she says.

With the epic romance behind her, Arun will now be seen in a different avatar in her cameo in Shyam Benegal’s comedy Mahadev, starring Shreyas Talpade and Amrita Rao. “After Jodhaa Akbar, it’s difficult to say yes to any movie, but Benegal saab gave me my first break at Mandi House. I can never say no to him, particularly when the script is so different,” she says.

After films, the Choli ke peeche singer is set to come out of her self-imposed musical sabbatical. A new album is in the making in which she has collaborated with artists like Sivamani and Toufiq Qureshi. It is scheduled to release in summer. “At the end of the day I am a performer. Right now I seem to be making a fresh start all over again and I mean to savour every bit of it,” she says.
