Kolkata A piece of Mother Teresa’s saree will be traveling all the way to the Macedonian town — the place of Mother’s birth.

The Missionaries of Charity in Kolkata on Thursday donated personal effects of the order’s founder Mother Teresa to Macedonian government, which is setting up a museum in memory of the Nobel Laureate.

Macedonian Foreign Minister Antonio Miloshoski, other government officials and members of the Macedonian press are now on a visit to Kolkata.

“They are building a museum in memory of Mother and had requested us for some of her personal effects. We have given them some of the things from here,” said Sister Christie after the meeting of Missionaries of Charity Chief Sister Nirmala with the Macedonian foreign minister. Along with the piece of saree, other things that are being given include a picture of the sacred heart that the Mother had, a framed photo of Mother Teresa and a framed photo of her tomb.

Sources in the Missionaries of Charity said the museum was coming up close to the Mother’s home in the Macedonian capital Skopje and has already been completed. Sister Nirmala received Miloshoski and the delegation of 15 officials at around 7.30 am and took them around the Mother House showing them her tomb and the room she lived in. They were also shown an exhibition on the Mother and the work of the Missionaries of Charity.

“The foreign minister spent sometime in the Mother’s room and also visited the chapel where Mother used to pray,” said Sister Christie.

The delegation placed wreaths and a plaque before her tomb and handed over an engraved clock from Macedonia to Sister Nirmala as a memento.

“I have learnt that regardless of how small you are physically, you can achieve your objective if you are faithful enough,” Miloshoski told reporters after the visit that lasted for more than an hour. He said that Macedonians regarded Kolkata as a city where hospitality was a part of culture.
