The ghariyals are being released in two batches of 66 each. While the first batch will be released in the last week of January in Gerua in Katerniaghat area, the second lot will be released in the first week of February in Ganga at Hastinapur. The forest officials will be assisted by the Worldwide Fund For Nature.
A workshop was also held earlier in Hastinapur and Meerut division to train the officials in monitoring the released ghariyals. “This will be done for the first time. Earlier, we did not have any clue whether they were surviving or not,” said Eva Sharma, Conservator, Endangered Species.
Tracking and monitoring of these ghariyals will be done through sightings by the local forest officials. They will count their number with the help of plastic cattle tag on the tail of ghariyals.
