Vadodara, February 6 A Team of the University Grants Commission will come to M S University on February 16 on a three-day visit to assess the financial proposal of the varsity under the 11th Five Year Plan.

Among the demands likely to be put forth by most of the faculty deans include better infrastructure, more teachers, restructuring of existing courses and introducing new ones. MSU has drawn up a plan of Rs 150-crore with all the faculty deans presenting their proposals to pro-Vice Chancellor Dr S. M. Joshi at a meeting held recently.

According to the arts faculty dean, Professor R. J Shah, the faculty needs funds of around Rs 4 crore specifically for construction and maintenance of Bhasha Bhavan, a part of the MSU Bhasha Research Centre. “Besides infrastructure changes, the faculty needs more teachers in all departments, including French, Russian, Marathi, Philosophy and Library Science,” he said. In his proposal, he has also suggested restructuring of some of the courses such as first year B.A.

The dean of the fine arts faculty, D H Kannal, has sought a fund of Rs 5-6 crore for the faculty. Pointing put that this faculty has contributed a lot to the university with the awards and laurels it has received over the past 30 years, he said, “The buildings, the auditoriums and the gallery needs renovation as some of the world-class exhibitions are held here.”

In his proposal, he has emphasised on the need for air-conditioned auditoriums so that some of the important seminars could be organised in the faculty premises itself. Kannal has also suggested starting a course in printing design and technology.

The Faculty of Technology and Engineering has underlined the need for more facilities for training and placement. “We just received funds in the 8th Plan. We did not get any funds during the 9th and 10th Plans,” he said, adding that the Post B.A. (Nano-technology) received a grant of Rs 43 lakh from the Gujarat government. The dean of science faculty, R.V. Ramachandran, has outlined a requirement of at least Rs.10 crore to set up a maintenance fund for expensive laboratory equipments.
