Lucknow, February 13 Samajwadi Party chief and Leader of the Opposition, Mulayam Singh Yadav, launched a scathing attack on the 10-month-old Bahujan Samaj Party government in the state Assembly today.

Alleging that huge funds were being collected in the name of Mayawati, he said right from lekhpal to the chief secretary, from a constable to the DGP — all were involved in extortion.

In his two-hour-long speech, during which Mayawati was also present, Yadav spared the state government over nothing and took on the bureaucracy as well. He alleged that an undeclared Emergency-like situation is prevailing in the state. “Ineffective law and order crippled with rampant corruption and fake cases against political opponents are the achievements of the government,” he said. He claimed that as many as 11,000 leaders and workers of the Samajwadi Party have been framed in fake cases. “Many have obtained a stay order while several are still languishing in jail.”

Targeting Mayawati over her “pretensions” of a security threat, Yadav said: “Leaders who only think of their own security could never serve the nation or its people.”

“People in Delhi now crack jokes on the security threat to the UP chief minister. I want to caution her that this is just a ploy by the officers to sever her link with the masses. The chief minister should take note of this matter,” Yadav warned.

At teh same time, he, however, maintained that his and son Akhilesh Yadav’s life was under threat. “Recently, the Unionhome ministry has warned me about the threat from terrorists as well,” he said.

He demanded that the government immediately waive off all loans taken by farmers in Bundelkhand, besides reinstating the students’ union poll and the dissolved cooperative societies.

The former CM said the present government will collapse shortly under its own pressure. “When my government comes to power, it will reinstate the more than 18,000 dismissed cops from their date of dismissal,” he further added.

Questioning the bureaucracy’s role in the government, he said there was increasing frustration within the IAS and IPS cadres as the efficient officers are being ignored. “The CM seems to have lost faith in the IAS and IPS officers of UP so all investigation cases are referred to the CBI or to a team of few blue-eyed boys of the present regime.”

Criticising the CM for her tirade against the Centre over the special package for Bundelkhnad, he said: “The state government is not utilising the funds available but are still demanding Rs 80,000 crore from the Centre. What will they do with such a huge fund?”

Referring to the critical situation in Bundelkhand, he claimed that everyday there are five starvation deaths or suicides in the drought-hit region but government was sleeping. He also raised the plight of the sugarcane farmers owing to pending dues and non-functioning of sugar mills.

The only time Mayawati intervened in the debate was when Yadav said that he respected Dr Ambedkar and had even started the Ambedkar Rural Development Schemes. She alleged that the Ambedkar Memorial was ignored by the previous regime. She also objected when the SP member said the government had done nothing for the Dalits and was only interested in dividing the society in the name of Sarva Samaj.
