New Delhi/Lucknow Days after the Congress mounted pressure on his party over seat-sharing in UP by releasing a list of 24 candidates for the Lok Sabha polls in the state, SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav, after a meeting with BJP rebel Kalyan Singh, tried to turn the tables today by adding six more names to the SP list of 65 candidates and said his party would not contest six seats currently with the Congress.

Maintaining “I am not going to say that the alliance (with Congress) has broken,” Mulayam Singh said “we don’t withdraw our candidates from where we have announced we will contest... we tried for an alliance but it hasn’t materialised yet.”

The Congress said his announcement made seat-sharing talks difficult. “The SP reaction today has left very little space for dialogue and an alliance,” UP Congress chief Rita Bahuguna Joshi told The Indian Express. She said the Congress would not roll back its decision on contesting the 24 seats it announced last week.

Other than Rae Bareli (Sonia Gandhi) and Amethi (Rahul Gandhi), the SP said it would stay out of Kanpur, Dhaurahra, Mathura and Ghaziabad. It is learnt to have decided against contesting Ghaziabad and Mathura to avoid a split in votes against BJP’s Rajnath Singh and RLD leader Ajit Singh’s son respectively.
