Maintaining “I am not going to say that the alliance (with Congress) has broken,” Mulayam Singh said “we don’t withdraw our candidates from where we have announced we will contest... we tried for an alliance but it hasn’t materialised yet.”
The Congress said his announcement made seat-sharing talks difficult. “The SP reaction today has left very little space for dialogue and an alliance,” UP Congress chief Rita Bahuguna Joshi told The Indian Express. She said the Congress would not roll back its decision on contesting the 24 seats it announced last week.
Other than Rae Bareli (Sonia Gandhi) and Amethi (Rahul Gandhi), the SP said it would stay out of Kanpur, Dhaurahra, Mathura and Ghaziabad. It is learnt to have decided against contesting Ghaziabad and Mathura to avoid a split in votes against BJP’s Rajnath Singh and RLD leader Ajit Singh’s son respectively.
