Little did Sheela Thomas know that learning a foreign language during her college days would actually help her interact with her child’s German baby-sitter. Many like Thomas might have taken up an additional language as a subject during their college days and it has now turned into a blessing—both personal or professionally.

Usha Ramesh, a French tutor, says, “I had a liking for the language since school days and this passion made me undergo a course with Alliance Francais De Bombay. With this I could help many students who have taken up French as a subject. It is a delight to teach a month’s crash course for few NRI students who come to India during their summer holidays from the Middle East.”

Having a flair for languages, most importantly knowing an international language is a boon in today’s competitive world. Lolita Poonawala, a 21-year-old media student who studied German in school and college went to Max Mueller Bhavan says, “I learnt German in my college days. This has helped me get a scholarship for a media related course in Germany.”

A passion-driven thought could also give you a well-paid job of your liking. Mythili Easwaran, after completing a diploma in translation from Alliance Francais, got a job in a French company as a translator. “I wanted to learn French since I was in school. It is a good experience working with a complete French team and they are very cooperative in explaining hardcore technical subjects. After the course I also got a chance to go to France for an exchange programme arranged by East-West Cultural Association where I could complete yet another course.”

Knowing more than one international language is also an asset for few. Another language enthusiast Aditi Rajendra Shah who just finished her MCom confesses, “Having learnt both French and Spanish,

I was at the top of the world when I got an opportunity to visit abroad. Aditi, who did a Spanish course from Instituto Hispania, Bandra, is currently pursuing an advanced course in French from Mumbai

University. She has also done a diploma in Commercial and Translations. “I happen to learn Spanish when I was scheduled to go to USA. It was so much easier to interact with the local people when we went out. Now I am happy taking French tuitions at home.”
