Mumbai FC beat Mohammedan Sporting 3-0 in the 11th round encounter of the I-League played at the Cooperage on Tuesday. Riston Rodrigues, Kalia Kulothungan and Abhishek Yadav scored for the hosts. The win enabled Mumbai FC move to fourth position in the standings with 19 points, while the Kolkatan outfit continue to hover dangerously in the relegation zone at the halfway stage .
Medio Kulothungan has so far out-scored his fowards in terms of goals - tallying 5 now - and volleyed a header from Abel Hammond to help Mumbai go 2-0 up by half-time. Earlier, Riston Rodrigues’ angular grounder from 35 yards caught visiting custodian Naseem Akhtar off position, when the local challengers went into the lead in the 35th minute.
Mohameddan Sporting, who seemed to have peaked in this half of the season at the recent Federation Cup looked lack-lustre while travelling to Mumbai, repeatedly failing in finishing, as they struggled to find the net. The first ten minutes though, had seen Feroz Wasim work up pace and fury, initiating moves from the wing giving the impression that the white-and-black outfit would put up a show well above their current position on the table. But with Felix Zboagye hitting the side-net in the 10th minute, Mumbai seized control of proceedings, though Rodrigues opened the floodgates 25 minutes later.
An early substitution saw former India capped Abhishek Yadav come on for K Aseem, and the tall forward tapped in after a one-two with Hammond who back-heeled after dodging a defender.
The dying moments saw Mumbai FC drop a gear in defense, but they kept a clean slate as goalkeeper Amit Singha Roy stayed steady under the bar.
The result was a good warm-up for Mumbai ahead of their Friday clash against Federation Cup champions Mohun Bagan. “Putting Abhishek in early meant gambling on the left, but we’d decided on the substitution,” Mumbai FC coach David Booth said praising his squad’s clinical display. On Kulothungan’s prolific scoring this season, though his forwards haven’t always fired, Booth quipped, “I won’t start talking about him, or the goals with stop coming. I don’t care who’s scoring as long as the goals are coming.”
