The Mumbai outfit will have to fight it out with the Delhi heavy weights Osian’s New Delhi Heroes coached by Nigerian Chima Okorie, and with last season’s first division team like Mohammedan Sporting, Kolkata.
But MFC general manager, Henry Menezes said, “The draw looks fair and we will fight it out there”. He also informed that the MFC will play most of their matches in Kolhapur but their last match will be held in Assam.
MFC also fulfilled the AIFF’s guidelines of forming a professional club with the infrastructure and junior programme in place.
The competition will be held in Pune and Kolhapur and is expected to start on March 23. The other three outfits in the six-team group are Oil India from Assam, Indian Bank and Haryana’s Amity United.
Group A features Hindustan Aeronautics Limited from Bangalore, ONGC Ltd, State Bank of Travancore, Vasco Sports Club (Goa), Chirag United (Kolkata) and Pune FC.
Mohammedan Sporting and HAL were relegated after the last edition of the National Football League.
The top three clubs from each pool will make it to the final round of the competition, to be held in Guwahati in mid-April, and the top four decided after round-robin matches can make it to the I-League.
