Mumbai Tamil Nadu’s SRM boys cruise into final

Middle-order batsmen Bravish Shetty and Kunal Mathure scored patient centuries to put University of Mumbai in a commanding position in the All India Inter Zonal Inter University Cricket Tournament for the Rohinton Baria Trophy on Thursday.

The Mumbai centurions’efforts overshadowed Tamil Nadu’s SRM University’s six-wicket win over Delhi University in the other semifinal at the Bombay Gymkhana.

Put in to bat by last year’s semi-finalists and West Zone runners-up Rashtra Sant Tukadoji Maharaj University, Nagpur on Day One of the two-day semifinals at the Elf-Vengsarkar ground, Oval Maidan, defending champions Mumbai got off to a good start as opener Chintan Shah and Sujit Nayak put on 120 runs for the second wicket.

Later, Shetty, who scored 114, and left-hander Mathure, who remained unbeaten on 100, put on 205 runs for the fourth wicket to consolidate the Mumbai innings as the hosts ended the day on 360 for 5.

SRM University sailed into the final after Delhi University succumbed to pace and were bowled out for a paltry 65.

Right-arm medium pacer J Kaushik snared four for 13 off eight overs, while Senthil Nathan, K Sriram and Ashwin Kumar took two wickets apiece.

Brief Scores (Semi-finals):

At Elf-Vengsarkar, Oval Maidan: Univ of Mumbai 360 for 5 (Bravish Shetty 114, Kunal Mathure 100 n.o., Sujit Nayak 66, Chintan Shah 53; Nilesh Bansod 2-84) vs RSTM, Nagpur.

At Bombay Gymkhana: Delhi Univ 65 all out (J Kaushik 4-13, Ashwin Kumar 2-11, K Sriram 2-16, Senthil Nathan 2-18) lost to SRM, Tamil Nadu 69 for 4 (K B Arun Karthick 32; Ravi Dixit 2-32, Chanderpaul Saini 2-32) by 6 wkts.
