The witnesses included two photographers from a national English daily who had clicked pictures of the incident, an ACP from the traffic police who had intervened while passing through the area, a traffic constable and a driver.
When asked about the media reports stating that all the accused had been identified, Joint Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) K L Prasad said, “All I can say is that the parade was held. Saying anything more than that will be improper and will harm the judicial process.”
Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner of Police K M Prasanna said another identification parade may be required in case of fresh arrests or if the victims come forward to identify them.
The witnesses’ statements were recorded before a Special Executive Magistrate inside the high security Arthur Road Jail in central Mumbai where the accused are lodged.
Two US-based NRI women hailing from Gujarat had gone for a special dance show featuring Bollywood actor Bipasha Basu at the hotel with two male companions.
They were allegedly molested, groped and their clothes torn by a mob of over 70 people while leaving the hotel.
A traffic police team led by ACP Amarjeet Singh had intervened and dispersed the crowds. Photographs of the incident were later published which led to a public outcry.
“I am a witness in the case and was called for the identification parade,” Singh told reporters.
He refused to answer questions as to why had he not filed a complaint himself or arrested the accused at the spot.
All the 14 accused were granted bail by a local court yesterday on furnishing a surety of Rs 10,000 each.
However, a senior jail official said it will be at least three or four days before they are actually released as getting the release order is a lengthy process.
