Mumbai, January 6 The much-awaited Mumbra Bypass Road was inaugurated by the Public Works Department Minister Chhagan Bhujbal on Sunday.

Vehicular traffic coming from Gujarat and Nasik and going towards JNPT, Pune, Goa and the southern states can now skip the old Mumbai-Pune Highway and the Thane Belapur Road, which is already facing a lot of traffic congestion. The road will also cater to heavy vehicles coming from Nasik and Gujarat and would save some 30-45 minutes by bypassing Mumbra and Kausa town.

The 6-km bypass, which starts from Thane and ends beyond Kausa, has been built at a cost of Rs 219.46 crore by Atlanta Limited on the BOT (Built and Operate) basis.

The local residents, meanwhile, demanded exemption from the toll which the company would be charging to recover the construction cost. “We would certainly discuss this issue with Atlanta and PWD officials soon,” Bhujbal said.
