Municipal schools in Vadodara plagued by dearth of PT teachers

Vadodara A dearth of physical training (PT) teachers in the municipal school board in most schools across the district has forced teachers to juggle roles.

In 36 buildings where classes are held for 115 schools, only 20 teachers take the physical training classes. That means, not even a single PT teacher is made available for a school building. The school board, however, has a different take.

“Two of the teachers had retired a few months ago and the posts will be filled soon. The present number of 20 PT teachers is sufficient, as every school has at least two teachers,” said Mehul Zaveri, chairman of the board.

While students of the municipal-run schools do not get proper physical training, the PT teachers in the other schools are over burdened. “There is not much we can do. Giving proper training to so many students all at once is a bit difficult. Individual supervision on every child is not possible,” said a teacher in a municipal school, on condition of anonymity.

Many teachers have to take physical training classes at more than one school.

“We have made the time table in such a way that classes do not clash,” said Zaveri.

Most schools also lack primary infrastructure of a playground. While many playgrounds in schools like the one in Fatehpura are dug up, many schools do not have space around the building to create one.

Other districts also have a similar tale to tell. Municipal schools in Anand district have only four teachers for physical training among 25 schools.
