Vadodara Police had ignored man’s complaint about Pakistani number on his mobile bill

After allegedly ignoring a sensitive application submitted by a resident of Manjalpur regarding the mention of two Karachi numbers in his detailed mobile bill for November 2008, the Detection of Crime Branch (DCB) and the Makarpura police have initiated an investigation into the matter.

Shreyash Shah, a peon in the Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) and a resident of D-29, Kasturinagar Society in Manjalpura, found something fishy in his mobile phone bill for the period October 15 to November 14, 2008. After taking up the matter with his service provider, Vodafone, he came to know that through his number (9727718819), calls had been made to two numbers abroad.

“My client got in touch with Vodafone for the irregularities, but there was no satisfactory response from the company. To verify if the numbers were known to him, Shah called on them (+923022374299 and +923022915804), only to find that they were Karachi numbers. Alarmed, he immediately approached the Makarpura police, but they only accepted an application on January 8,” said Mukesh Shah, Shreyash’s counsel who has now filed a case in the consumer court.

According to the details, calls worth Rs 624 had been made on November 4, 7 and 11.

Mukesh Shah said: “We have urged the court to act against Vodafone for deficiency in service, breach of agreement and unfair trade practice. We have also asked the court to take action against the Makarpura inspector who ignored such a sensitive matter and did not register an FIR to begin investigation.”

The police began an inquiry only on Monday after the matter reached the consumer court. “We have sent a policeman to get the details from Vodafone. The DCB will investigate the matter,” said Makarpura Inspector L K Katara.
