SPU authorities expressed their dissatisfaction over the results, as the varsity had received a four-star rating five years ago. Sources said the university had applied for the accreditation in 2008, and a NAAC team visited it in February this year.
Vice-Chancellor B G Patel said, “We are not satisfied with the rating. We have developed a lot in the last five years. The methodology adopted by NAAC has changed. Earlier, there was a numbering system; now it is done through grades.” SPU has 25 postgraduate (PG) departments, a constituent college, and 70 colleges affiliated to it. There are 14 PG centres in the affiliated colleges. Various faculties such as Science, Arts, Commerce, Management, Engineering, Pharmacy, Medicine, Homoeopathy, Home Science, Law and Education in the SPU offer postgraduate degree courses, postgraduate diploma courses, diploma courses and advanced certificate courses. Undergraduate courses are taught in the colleges or institutes affiliated to the university.
Patel added: “We expected an ‘A’ grade, as we have progressed in several research projects and infrastructure. Earlier, we got 72 per cent and a four-star rating. This time, we got 2.75 marks out of a total of 5 marks. The section that gave importance to research has also changed in the accreditation. Now, the testing is done through Cumulative Assessment Grading System (CGPS). Therefore, the previous rating and the present one cannot be compared."
