Kolkata The peer team of National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) has asked the University of Calcutta to connect its eight campuses both “physically and virtually”.

According to the visiting nine-member NAAC team, the university should introduce its own transportation system, which will help the faculty members and students to move from one campus to another. Moreover, the NAAC said, all the campuses should have tele-network facilities.

“All the eight campuses are at considerable distances from each other. We would suggest a transport system between the campuses and a virtual tele-network connectivity so that the university can operate across the campuses through real physical mobility,” said S P Thyagrajan, the chairman of the NAAC peer review committee, on Thursday after the team’s three-day accreditation visit of the university.

The connectivity of the campuses will also help the university to adopt a choice-based credit system by which the students at the post-graduate level could have the option of taking up optional subjects cutting across streams and strengthening inter-disciplinary approach.

“For instance, say there are 10 core subjects and five optional subjects. Now a student who goes for a Masters course in science subject can choose sociology as optional paper and attend classes with the help of tele-connectivity,” said a member of the NAAC team.

The Vice-Chancellor of the Calcutta University, Suranjan Das, said the university will actively consider the suggestions made by the NAAC team.

The NACC team expressed satisfaction with the research work being carried out at the university, especially in the field of nano-science and social sciences. The members were also impressed by the university’s central library.
