The National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) has sanctioned Rs 99.86 crore for the implementation of Rural Drinking Water Projects in Narmada and Porbandar districts.
The money for the project will be utilised from the bank’s Rural Infrastructure Development Fund given to the Government of Gujarat.
NABARD has sanctioned Rs 1,084.93 crore for 4,027 projects in 2008-09.
According to the project plan, Narmada and Porbandar districts will be provided with a continuous supply of drinking water from Narmada Canal carrying water from the Sardar Sarovar.
The project is expected to solve the drinking water problem faced by 9.75 lakh people residing in 225 villages and five towns in these two districts.
NABARD gives the Rural Infrastructure Development fund to the government for infrastructural development of rural areas and increasing the profits made by the farmers.
With the recent sanction, the cumulative sanctioned funds from NABARD to the Government of India for 32,330 projects has totalled to Rs 7,246.81 crore.
Of this, Rs 1,337.05 crore have been sanctioned for 39 drinking water projects in rural areas. If claims are to be believed, the state government has so far utilised Rs 4,880.46 crore.
