The KMC, however, seems to remain unfazed by the traders’ protest.

“The market has failed to meet the fire safety norms and the structural engineers have not provided the green light for allowing trade in the top floors of the market. Hence, there is no other options but to pull down the unsafe portion of the building,” said the municipal commissioner, Alapan Bandopadhyay.

Citing the Supreme Court’s observation that the portion of the building is unsafe, Mayor Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya said: “We want to defend the interest of the traders. But we cannot allow the unsafe portion of the building to exist. We will demolish the top six floors of the Nandaram market and Kashiram block.”
