The biggest hint of this came from the vendors who have been asked by Tata Motors to meet in Pune on October 16. The meeting — described as a “national level” one — will have the Singur impasse on agenda.
A vendors’ meeting on such a scale had not been held in the recent past. Sources in the vendor companies said in the meeting, the Tatas will take a final call on the site from where the Nano ancillaries will be delivered.
Confirming the meeting, the Tata Motors, however, said it had nothing to do with the Singur impasse.
A spokesperson said: “We will have the annual vendors’ convention on October 16. This is not at all related to the Singur issue. It is a routine yearly meet.” He, however, was not able to give the date or the venue of the last year’s meet.
The vendors, however, are hoping for a decision on the impasse. “The Tata Motors has informed us about the meeting and we will attend it. We are hoping that there will be a decision on Singur as we have been in the dark for over a month now,” said a senior executive of Endurance Group, which is to supply the aluminium die cast components for Nano, mainly gear housing, engine castings and bracket.
“There needs to be a solution to this. Our imported equipment is gathering dust in Singur. We have decided to shift all our machinery to our other plants on Monday,” said a senior executive of Endurance Technologies, which was supposed to supply exhaust, converters, and suspensions. The company, he said, had received a schedule for order from October 1 for supply to the Pune plant. “We will be supplying the components from our plant in Nashik,” he added.
