Mumbai A...organise a campaign againt felling of 100 trees for a road

The residents of Napean Sea Road on Tuesday carried out a campaign, inspired by the Chipko Movement, to save more than 100 trees in their locality from getting axed because of a road widening project.

“Napean Sea Road is witnessing a mass road widening operation for which the civic body is suggesting the cutting of trees. It is unfortunate that the civic body treats this area as a highway and not as a residential area,” said Bittu Sehgal, noted wildlife expert and a resident of the area who started the movement.

The movement saw a large number of children and senior citizens participating in it. Ten-year-old Kiah Shah hugged an ancient tree near her home on Napean Sea Road and tied a green ribbon around it to stop it from being cut. “The trees are important for us. They make the neighbourhood look beautiful. Cars will just increase noise and air pollution hence I am here to protect them,’ said Kiah.

The residents said that what they need is high-quality footpaths with these trees as shade. “Rather than arbitrarily undertaking road widening what we want is proper footpaths on both sides of the road which can facilitate pedestrian movement,” added Sehgal.

save trees by Urvi Tejani on 12 Sep 2009

i am impressed with the way you are protecting old trees.we should stand on one platform to protect our green nature. As many trees were cut in borivali and i was just a mere spectator.there should be people like you who can really make a difference.please let me know if you have a campaign which i can join.i cant understand how i can express my distress but i am deeply moved with one old huge tree which was cut in my locality to widen the road.are there no other alternatives left?whom should we ask? Please advice and thanks
