Kolkata Governor M K Narayanan called Home Secretary Samar Ghosh and other senior police officers to Raj Bhavan on Thursday and inquired about the accident involving Mamata Banerjee’s convoy on August 9. Besides, the Governor also inquired about the law and order situation in the state.

“The Governor wanted to know how exactly the incident happened and we have told him that,” Ghosh said after his meeting with Narayanan.

The state government has already ordered a CID inquiry into the incident. When asked whether they had told the Governor that the Trinamool leader did not cooperate with the state government on matters pertaining to her security, Ghosh said: “We have told him how much security should be there for the Railway Minister and how much actually is there usually for her.”

The Governor also asked how Banerjee’s car got stuck for more than an hour on the road alongside the forests of Maoist-infested Jhitka. The administration is also being questioned about the logic behind giving permission to PDCI leader Siddiqulah Choudhury to hold a rally at Lalgarh on the same day.

“Since the time schedule of the two rallies did not clash with each other, we gave the permission,” Ghosh said, adding that Banerjee stayed back at the venue even after the rally. “In fact, the VVIPs are supposed to leave the venue as soon as the rally is over,” said Ghosh.

Prior to Banerjee’s visit to Lalgarh, the Governor had written twice to the Home department asking it to ensure adequate security for her not only during the rally but during her travel.
