Ahmedabad, February 2 Narmada water needs to be used judiciously, as there is a chance of over-irrigation owing to the abundance of water available for agriculture, which may lead to increased salinity, according to Jaynarayan Vyas, minister for health and tourism.

Vyas was speaking at the 16 D T Lakdawala Memorial Lecture at the 38th Annual Conference of the Gujarat Economic Association.

Vyas, a former minister for Narmada Development in the Keshubahi cabinet and a known pro dam activist, said that it was an absolute necessity to ensure that water from the Sardar Sarovar Project (SSV) is “volumetrically distributed”.

He said in Gujarat, 30 per cent of the electricity generated is used by farmers and the government gives an annual subsidy of Rs 1,800 crore to the sector.

As such, overuse of water is not a welcome sign, he added.
