Vadodara, March 3 In an effort to update it with the changing trends in crime, the Gujarat Police has tied up with the National Association of Software and Services Companies (NASSCOM) to start an indigenous Technology Training Cell (TTC). The cell, which will start functioning in the next six months, will train police officials not only in cyber crime and laws, but also in the latest techniques in forensic science investigation. A basic computer course for fresh cadets has also been introduced in police training schools in Gujarat.

Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) Kuldeep Sharma said, "We have already liased with NASSCOM who have agreed to train Gujarat Police officers and help us set up this facility. Once the TTC is ready, the training, under NASSCOM's faculty will begin in batches," Sharma said. He said he has already sent a letter to the Joint Director, Gujarat Police Academy to start work on the TTC, adding that it would be complete in the coming six months.

The move comes as Gujarat lacks in-house training facility and has so far relied on institutions outside the state for the same. Sharma said, "So far, there are no training facilities in the state for such exclusive training and we usually relied on experts from outside to come and lecture or teach officers." He said the main idea behind starting this cell was to keep police officers up to date about the changing trends criminal activities, like cyber crimes and forensic science.

He said after undergoing this course, police officers would also learn to handle crime scenes with greater care. "Though we have a full-fledged Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) in Gandhinagar, the TTC will prepare officers in handling a crime scene like how to handle evidence, what to touch and what not," stated Sharma. The police officers will also get some elementary training in learning to use computers and the latest technology to their benefit as well as understanding how to gather digital evidence.

Meanwhile, basic computer training for fresh police cadets is all set to change as well. Sources in the Gujarat Police said that this training was necessary as the state police force was all geared up to get completely digital, where all the information would be fed into computers. Sharma said, "The course will teach them about entering case details, facts and figures into the computer, which will be part of a larger network."
