A man was found bludgeoned to death with a tree branch inside the Sanjay Gandhi National Park in Borivali on Thursday. The police said the accused, who was a friend of the deceased, hit him in a fit of rage after they got into an argument.
According to the Kasturba Marg police, they had received a call at 8:00 am on Thursday from the forest guards at the park saying that a body was found there. Acting on the tip-off, the police went to the spot and found a body of a man in his mid-thirties. He was identified as Shekhar Dalvi (35), a resident of Nallasopara in Thane. Dalvi had a bag with him, containing some clothes and documents, said the police.
“The investigation revealed that Dalvi and Gaikar were neighbours in Nallasopara and often used to consume alcohol together. After Dalvi was thrown out of his home by his family members, Gaikar offered him a stay with his mother Heerabai Gaikar (50) who lives at Adivasipada inside the national park,” said Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Rakesh Maria.
“However, the people who live there have an unwritten code that prevents any outsiders from being allowed to stay with them. They urged Dalvi to leave the place as he used to get drunk to add to their woes. When Gaikar went to ask him to leave, Dalvi asked for money for transportation. The duo then got into a heated argument following which Gaikar picked up a branch and hit Dalvi on his head,” added Maria.
