Chandigarh, February 7 A National seminar on “Human Settlement Dynamics and Population, Economy, Environment Interface with Special Reference to Northwest India” was inaugurated by Prof G S Gosal, Professor Emeritus, Department of Geography. The seminar was organised by the Department of Geography, PU.

Dr Gosal said that the key to understanding overall human settlement dynamics is rooted in the rural settlements and their transformation into large urban units.

Prof K D Sharma, Coordinator, SAP (UGC), introduced the theme of the seminar. He said that the urbanisation of the North West part of the country had led to massive investments in housing, industry, roads and power.

Prof Surinder Kumar Aggarwal, a faculty member at Delhi University, called the present century as the ‘Urban Century’. He termed the recent development as ‘hypo-urbanisation’, where the pace of urbanisation has outdistanced infrastructure development. The convener of the seminar, Dr. Karanjot Kaur Brar, presented the vote of thanks. Nearly 16 papers were presented in the three technical sessions.
