Pune Showing their "prowess," NCP corporators in the Pune Municipal Corporation on Wednesday joined hands to get a ward officer of Yerawada ward office suspended for allegedly sharing with the media the name of the corprorator, who had asked the ward office to cut water connection of a housing society in Chandannagar a few days back.

This took place during the general body meeting of PMC. The demand came predominantly from the NCP corporators, when Usha Kalamkar, a woman corporator from Chandannagar ward came forward along with other women corporators before Mayor Rajlaxmi Bhosale seeking action against the ward officer.

The demand referred to an incident that had taken place some days back, in which the ward office had snapped water connection of a housing society in Chandannagar.

The ward officer Vasant Patil had allegedly told the media that the action had come after Kalamkar had prompted him to do so. This led the NCP corporator to demand an action against the ward officer for defaming her.

During the general body meeting, Kalamkar and other women corporators started demanding the ward officer’s suspension. Seeing this, other corporators including NCP leader in PMC Anil Bhosale, Congress corporator Virendra Kirad also extended their support to the women corporators. Upon this, the additional municipal commissioner Umakant Dangat said that action would be taken against the concerned ward officer following an enquiry. He also promised that the civic administration would first issue a show-cause notice to the official.

However, the corporators were in no mood to relent to this and persisted with their demand of his suspension. Finally, mayor too came out in support of the corporators.

She rebuked the civic administration saying the civic officials do not give heed to the corporators.

Buckling down under pressure, Dangar was finally compelled to announce that the ward officer has been suspended.
