Mumbai Lashing out against the Shiv Sena-ruled Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and its inability to deal with the growing water shortage in the city, the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) on Monday threatened to undertake ward-wise protest to draw the administration’s attention towards the city’s water woes.

“The water crisis in the city can be seen everywhere. An additional 30 per cent of water is wasted because of leakages and water theft. In every standing committee meeting, we bring up the issue but the civic body is not doing anything about it,” said NCP corporator and group leader, Niyaz Vanu.

The party claimed that the BMC spends huge amounts of money on garden development and swimming pool development, but ignores the essentials. The NCP asserted that such serious issues should be tackled first. “Water supply is a serious issue, the civic body should immediately take care of this,” said Vanu.

The party also stated that water stealing should be taken seriously. “Water stealing should be considered like a crime and an FIR should be registered against the culprits. Only then such acts can be curbed. We will also look into how successful have the telescopic water meters been,” said Vanu.
