Kolkata The National Council of Teachers Education (NCTE) has written to the state government asking it to send a list of students who have passed out from the Primary Teachers Training Institutes (PTTIs) and who have the requisite qualification as per the norms laid down by the council.

In a letter, which reached the school education department this week, the council has asked it to send a list of students who have passed the higher secondary (HS) examination with 50 per cent marks and said only these students can be absorbed as teachers in the schools across the state.

In spite of the change in NCTE regulations the state government had continued to admit those students who had cleared their Class X exams to the PTTIs.

“We have got a reply from the NCTE neither accepting nor objecting to our demands. However, the conditions set by the NCTE will not help us in resolving the issue,” said School Education Minister Partha De.

After hearing about the NCTE’s letter, PTTI students took to the streets and gheraoed the offices of district inspectors (DIs) of the schools in various districts on Thursday. They also blocked roads at various places. Police force was deployed to control the students.

“We want the state and the Centre to come up with a solution for all the students involved, as quickly as possible,” said Prabir Ghosh, the state secretary of the PTTI students union.
