New Delhi The Capital is on its way to getting its own Heritage Circuit linking the three World Heritage Sites — Red Fort, Humayun’s Tomb and the Qutub Minar.

As reported by Newsline earlier, the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) has finalised the plan and has placed it before the Lieutenant Governor Tejendra Khanna and Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit.

As various government bodies are involved in the plan, INTACH, in its proposal, has proposed an umbrella organisation to oversee its execution.

“We have approached the Chief Minister and also the LG in this regard and they have proposed to set up a heritage committee for the purpose,” he added.

“The execution of the entire plan will have to be done in a phased manner as different areas are under various civic agencies and government authorities. A body has to be set up to oversee the implementation of the plan and coordinate with all agencies,” said Professor AGK Menon, Convenor of the Delhi Chapter of INTACH.

“The MCD has already taken up a section of the route from Darya Ganj to ITO, covering Feroze Shah Kotla and Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg,” he said.

The INTACH is now trying to engage civic agencies like the Public Works Department (PWD) and the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) to take up parts of the plan.

“Though Delhi has the potential of being a World Heritage City, it is yet to be listed as one. This is because it hasn't been developed well. This Heritage Circuit will be the first step towards applying for Heritage City status given by the UNESCO,” Menon said.
