‘Need of the hour is to have counselling cells in all schools, colleges’

Chandigarh A two-day seminar on ‘Strengthening Guidance and Counselling Services in Schools and Colleges’ was organised by the Centre for Adult, Continuing Education and Extension and Guidance and Counselling Cell of the Panjab University, on Tuesday.

Around 100 students, teachers and counsellors from various schools and colleges attended the seminar.

Vice-Chancellor of PU, Professor R C Sobti, inaugurated the seminar and emphasised on letting students choose vocations of their choice, depending upon their talent, aptitude and interest. He advised the teachers to recognise the creativity, ability, strengths and weaknesses of the children, before counselling and advising them. Professor N K Chadha of the Department of Psychology, Delhi University, said that counselling is required for children of all kinds. He emphasised on the need of having trained counsellors.

Director of CACEE, Dr (Mrs) Sween, said: “It is about time counselling cells are established in all education institutions, school and colleges to relieve our youth of stress and strain of academic pressures, competitions, emotional, vocational and personal worries.”

The CBSE has taken right step in this direction and instructed all senior secondary schools to set up guidance and counselling cells, she said. Professor Jatinder Mohan of PU, Dr Krishan Kumar from State Institution of Education, Professor Meena Sehgal from Department of Psychology, PU, Dr Aditya and Dr Prabha Vig were also present.
