Negi stays on pole; Russian GM stunned

New Delhi Delhi lad Parimarjan Negi continued his winning ways and defeated Vidit Santosh Gujarathi in the fifth round of the 7th Parsvnath International Chess Tournament here on Wednesday.

Negi, with five points from as many rounds, now shares the lead along with Uzbek Grandmaster Safin Shukhrat, GM Petr Kostenko of Kazakhstan and Boris Katalymov of Kazakhstan.

The day had its normal share of upsets with the top one being Sethuraman’s victory over Grandmaster Evgeny Gleizerov of Russia in just 31 moves. Meanwhile, another Grandmaster in the fray, Magesh Chandran, also tasted his first defeat in the tournament at the hands of Roktim Bandyopadhyay.

International Master Sriram Jha held Grandmaster Surya Sekhar Ganguly to a draw, while Dibeyandu Barua also settled to a draw with Djuraev Sokhib.

Wednesday’s results: (Round 5): GM Parimarjan Negi (5) beat FM Vidit Santosh Gujrathi (4); GM Safin Shukhrat of Uzbekistan (5) beat IM Prathamesh Mokal (4); IM Boris Katalymov of Kazakhstan (5) beat GM Mikhail Ulibin of Russia (4); GM Petr Kostenko of Kazakhstan (5) beat C Praveen Kumar (4); GM Yuriy Kuzubov of Ukraine (4.5) beat IM Himanshu Sharma (3.5); IM Sriram Jha (4) drew with GM Surya Shekhar Ganguly (4); GM Evgeny Gleizerov of Russia (3.5) lost to IM Sethuraman S P (4.5); GM Dibyendu Barua (4) drew with FM Djuraev Sokhib of Tajikistan (4); IM Arghyadip Das (4) drew with GM Neelotpal Das (4); IM Roktim Bandyopadhyay (4.5) beat GM P Magesh Chandran (3.5); M R Lalith Babu (3.5) lost to IM Atanu Lahiri (4.5); Debashis Das (4) drew with IM M R Venkatesh (4) ;Joshi G B (3.5) lost to Justin Sarkar of USA (4.5), GM Praveen Thipsay (4) drew with Matta Vinay Kumar (4), Jain Shreyansh Daklia (3.5) lost to IM P Karthikeyan (4.5).
