Mumbai The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s fire brigade got a new chief fire officer on Monday. After successfully completing his tenure as the deputy fire officer, PD Kargupikkar will now be taking the seat of the chief fire officer.

“The news came as a surprise to me. Hope I will be able to bring about the changes I had always wanted to be in the fire brigade,” Kargupikkar told Newsline.

After the recent terror attacks, Kargupikkar had vociferously stated that most of the high-rises flout almost all fire safety norms.

“Several fire-safety norms are openly flouted. In most high-rises, the escape routes have been used for installing superficial things. Hand-pumps and sprinkler systems too are not working. Fire alarms, extinguishers, wires are missing from most high-rises,” Kargupikkar had said.

“I hope to bring about some major changes on fire safety issues, hopefully I will succeed,” said Kargupikkar.
