Jalandhar In an effort to expedite the completion of four-laning work on the Bhogpur-Jammu National Highway and resolve the dispute between landholders whose property was acquired for the project and the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI), Jalandhar Divisional Commissioner S.R. Ladhar today announced a new compensation package for property owners.

Many villages in Dasuya and Mukerian sub-divisions along the Bhogpur-Mukerian stretch had rejected the original government compensation plan. Initially scheduled to be completed by May 2008, construction on the highway is yet to begin on the Bhogpur side.

Instructed to act as an arbiter on the three-year-old issue by the Supreme Court, the Commissioner said the new deal will issue Rs 2.5 lakh per marla compensation to commercial landowners, Rs 2 lakh per marla for residential properties, Rs 1.60 lakh per marla for vacant plots, and Rs 1 lakh per marla for agricultural land. Owners of residential land saw Rs 50,000 per marla gain from the original compensation proposal, while farmers’ compensation fell from the initially proposed Rs 1.5-lakh offer.

The Bhogpur-Mukerian passage is the only way to access the Vaishno Devi shrine and Amarnath Yatra. Currently, thousands of highway commuters are forced into a single lane of suspect road quality
