The circular further states that all 159 colleges under the university will have to complete the admission procedures between June 21 and July 31, and students can opt for a change in subject till August 7. Students, meanwhile, have shown an inclination towards new courses like Microbiology, Computer Science and Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA). While Scottish Church College has 30 seats each for these new courses, the college has received an astounding number of applications for these.
“We have received nearly 17, 000 applications,” said J Abraham, principal, Scottish Church College.
Alike previous years, the Presidency College today hosted a long queue of students applying for its coveted seats. “14,000 forms have been downloaded in the first two days and another 4,000 were downloaded today. There is a huge demand for English, chemistry and mathematics,” said Amitabha Chatterjee, Head of the Department of Economics and In-charge of Admissions, Presidency College.
Ashutosh College principal Dipak Kumar Kar said there is a huge rush for new subjects like microbiology, biochemistry, journalism, electronics, computer Science, BBA and fisheries, which were introduced in the college five years ago. “While each of these departments has only 25 seats, over 1,000 applications have been received for each. In total, almost 30,000 applications have been received.”
Nearly 4.4 lakh-odd students are vying for about 1.6-lakh seats this year.
