“The proposal to develop a new goods shed has been on the cards for four to five years now to cater to the additional demand and the Railway Board recently gave its assent to the proposal,” said divisional railway manager, D K Jain.
With over 1,000 trucks passing through Maal Dhakka each day, the traffic situation near the station has deteriorated. “On some occasions, rail travellers have missed trains after getting stuck in the traffic. There is also pressure from various lobbies regarding pollution because of the cement and traffic,” said Jain.
However, the proposed goods shed is not going to come up any time soon. “It will take at least seven to eight years to be developed,” he said. This will also not mean unloading cement at Maal dhakka would be phased out to Ram Tekdi, although the intensity will be reduced.
Water supply at the Pune Railway Station and railway quarters was another issue discussed at the meeting. “The station has seen passenger traffic grow by 20 per cent annually,” Jain said. “Our requirements are growing. We have more trains and additional coaches that need cleaning. There are railway colonies at different places. The water supply needs to be augmented.”
