Mumbai Down Payyade Sports to claim Purshottam Shield

New Hind Sports Club completed the formality in style when they defeated Payyade Sports by 129 runs on the last day of the three-day final to win the Purshottam Shield cricket tournament, organized by PJ Hindu Gymkhana at their ground on Sunday.

New Hind’s win was almost certain when they had taken a lead of 300 runs on the previous day. On Sunday, when they finally made 197 for seven in the allotted 40 overs, Payyade were left to score 343 to win in just 40 overs, a nearly impossible ask.

New Hind’s certain win became more sweeter when right-handed paceman Pratik Kar bowled with lot of fire and grabbed five wickets for 76 runs to help his team bowl out Payyade for just 214 in 33.1 overs. “I knew when they required to score so many runs in quick time, they would go for their shots. So I decided to bowl on the stumps and not give them any room to play any big strokes on either side of the wicket,” said Kar. “I managed to trouble them and under pressure, they threw away their wickets.”

Kar in fact wanted to prove a point. “Despite taking 18 wickets in three matches in Times Shield ‘B’ division playing for Mumbai Port Trust, they overlooked my claim in the first XI for the Mumbai University side. I was kept as a standby and I was really very disappointed with that,” said the 22-year-old.

For Payyade Rohan Bhosle (56), Karan Joshi (34) and Sanjeev Mishra (52) did bulk of the scoring while chasing a mammoth target.

Brief Scores
New Hind (1st Innings) 294 in 90 overs and (2nd Innings) 197 for 7 in 40 overs (Bhavin Thakkar 57, Prashant Naik 67; Anureet Kathuria 4-44, Rahul Thakur 2-57) bt Payyade S (1st Innings) 149 all out in 53 overs (Karan Joshi 32, Harshad Rawle 38 n.o.; Yogesh Dicholkar 6-33, Sanjeev Srivastav 2-32) and (2nd Innnings) 214 all out in 33.1 overs (Rohan Bhosle 56, Karan Joshi 34, Sanjeev Mishra 52; Pratik Kar 5-76, Bhavin Thakkar (2-47) by 129 runs.
