A new building for PGIMER at the RML Hospital complex, complete with an administrative block, auditorium, seminar hall-cum-library and a trainees’ hostel has already been constructed and will start functioning shortly, said Dr N K Chaturvedi, Medical Superintendent, RML Hospital. “There is a need to enhance the availability of specialist medical manpower in the country and this institute will serve the purpose,” said Dr Chaturvedi.
For the academic year 2009-10, the institute offers 35 seats, which will soon be increased to 69. Fifty per cent of the seats will be reserved for Delhi students. The institute will be affiliated to the Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University.
The upcoming institute aims to maximise the utilisation of manpower and infrastructure available at RML Hospital. It will enhance the academic environment in hospital and will contribute towards medical research in the country.
The decision to set up a PGIMER in the Capital was taken after the post-graduate medical courses offered by the Delhi University at Dr RML hospital was discontinued in 2004.
