New Year begins with a crackdown on bootleggers

Vadodara, January 3 The Vadodara police celebrated their New Year on a good note, arresting three notorious bootleggers under the Prevention of Anti-Social Activities Act (PASA).

Since the completion of the Assembly elections, the police have cracked several pending cases, including busting gangs of burglars, recovering stolen vehicles and launching a furious crackdown on bootleggers.

The Prevention of Crime Branch (PCB) arrested four persons under PASA on Wednesday. PCB Police Inspector Chaudhary said, “We want to send out a clear message to bootleggers and smugglers in the city, which is why we started the crackdown from the first (January 2008).” The arrested persons are Vijay Nikam, his son Ravi, Mahendra Yadav and Sandeep Jaiswal

The Detection of Crime Branch (DCB) was not behind in is exercise and raided a mini-liquor factory in Makarpura on December 31 and arrested three persons. The DCB said that the arrested men brought liquor in tankers from Daman because of the crackdown during the elections and bottled the liquor in Vadodara. The DCB also recovered around 50 bottles from the spot.

Vadodara Joint Commissioner of Police, Pravin Sinha said the police decided to finish pending cases after December 23, when the poll results were declared. “Though combing operations were on during the elections as well, most of the force was involved in bandobast duties,” he said.

Another important case was cracked with the recovery of six stolen vehicles that were lifted by a same gang. After arresting the gang, DCB PI K D Pandya said, “We had received an information about the location of the gang and immediately assembled a team and launched a raid. We recovered the stolen vehicles as well.” He added that the DCB also arrested a few house burglars in the last few days.
