Umra police caught 50 youngsters who were riding their vehicles in an inebriated state. The rest were caught in other areas.
Strict police arrangements were made to control the traffic as people rushed to their party destinations at Athwalines, Parle Point and Dumas beach to celebrate the occasion.
The entire stretch of Parle Point Road saw heavy traffic congestion, while vehicle horns added to the noise pollution. The city police staff, homeguards and traffic brigade were pressed into service to control the traffic. Deputy Commissioner of Police Subhash Trivedi was also seen walking from Athwagate area to Parle point to supervise the traffic.
Assistant Commissioner of Police, Traffic, M A Chauhan, acted swiftly and the traffic cops served RTO memos on 209 people. Out of these 209, 145 were caught for driving without license, 34 for riding with two pillion and 30 cases were of fancy number plate.
Surat Police Commissioner RMS Brar said, "The entire staff of Surat city police was on the roads. Even the reserve police were ordered to carry out patrolling. Extra police personnel were also deployed at the entry and exit points of the city as a precautionary measure. The locals cooperated during vehicle checking."
