Kolkata The Left Front government has issued show-cause notice to the NGO where a mentally-challenged child had died of malnutrition two days ago. “I cannot make a statement about the cause of the death of the child before I have got the post-mortem report,” Social Welfare Minister Biswanath Chowdhury told reporters when asked to comment on the incident.

Incidentally, according to the death certificate, the boy died of malnutrition.

Sources in the welfare department said an officer in every block is posted to monitor the functioning of NGOs funded by the government. “But it was evident from the incident that money was pocketed by the NGO, and there might be a nexus between the NGO and block-level officers,” said the source.
